Todaiji Temple was compleated in 752, with one of the largest bronze statues in the world. It has animposing gate supported by eighteen 25m high pillars. Blown down by a typhoon in 962, the gate was re-built in 1199. Its exterior niches has two 8m wooden figures of Deva Kings, gurdians of Buddism. Great Buddha is National Tresure. The statue measures 16.2, in height and has a face 4.8m. long and 3m. wide; eyes 1.2m.wide; a nose 48cm high. The materials used are estimated; 437 tons branze, 75kg of mercury, 130kg of pure gold and other materials.
Nara Park is popularly called the "Deer Park" by visitors because of its many deer. It is a natural woodland of fine turf and has various kinds of trees including Japanese cedar, Wisteria, Japanese andromeda, Japanese yew trees. There are about 1,100 tame deer roaming about the park. They are regarded as divine messengers of the Kasuga Shrine and are one of the main attractions.
Kasuga Shrine is located in a forest, and produces an atmoshere of peace and holiness unmatched by any other shrines. Since its foundation in 710, it has been identically reconstructed every 20 years. The buildings, painted vermillion, features the Kasuga style of achitecture. Some 3,000 lanterns line the road east from the second torii gate. Through the south gate, you enter spacious precincts. Beyond the Heuiden, a floorless structure built in 1650, rises the Main Hall, surrounded by an impressive gallery. It contains four buildings, all of which are Natinal Tresures.
