Maiko are the young ladies
who dance at parties held in tea houses, chaya,
to add to the fun. They are said to have started
in the 17th century when waitress at tea houses
would imitate Kabuki in entertaining the customers.
Only girls between the ages of 10 and 19 could be
called maiko at that time. Today the young ladies
remain maiko until they are about 25, when they
move up to the rank of geigi. The traditional way
of covering their faces with white powder indicates
that they have not yet full status.
