| NIJO CASTLE was built in 1603 as Kyoto residence
of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo
gaverment. Mian court was burnt down in 1788 so
only Second court is the original part. The present
Main court was built in 1827 modelling after one
which stood in the grounds of Kyoto Imperial Palace.
The castle has many cultural treasures including
Chinese Gate and Second Court buildings dating from
Momoyama Era ( 16th century ) , and is designated
a National Treasure for its splendid achitecture
and interior decoration. |

| Golden Pavilion is located at the foot of Kinugasa
Hill. It si a famous structute of Muromachi period
( 14-16C ). It was originally designed as the villa
of a court noble. The second owner, Yoshimitsu Ashikaga,
the 3rd shogun, greatly improved it and spent the
latter part of his life there in retirement from
the cares of state. He built the Gold Pavilion and
laid out the garden in 1394. His will was followed
by his son as sucessor to change the villa into
a Buddhist temple down in 1950 and reconstruced
in under name of Rokuonji. It was burned 1955. |

| Kyoto Imperial palace is famous for its elegant
simplicity and had been served as the Emperors's
palace until the capital was moved to Tokyo after
Meiji Restoration ( 1867 ). It was originally located
in the southwest part of the city. It was destroyed
by a fire in 1788, after which it was built, modelled
after the prior one, at the present site. This burned
down in 1854 again. The present builddings dating
from 1855, include Cerenial Hall, Study Hall and
Seiryuden. The Seiryuden ( Serene and cool hamber
) is named after the stream flowing beneath its
step. |

| Heian Shrine is a famous structure dedicated to
Emperor Kammu, the founder of Kyoto, and the Emperor
Komei, the last emperor in Kyoto. It was built to
commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding
of Kyoto in 1895. Its building , with the exception
of the ferroconcrete torii gate, are miniature replicas
of the first Imperial Palace built in Kyoto, in
794. The garden behind the shrine is well known
for its water lilies, roses, azaleas, maples and
weeping chery trees. |

| Sanjusangendo Temple is a national tresure with
1,030 standing Buddhist statues in its main hall.
The principal image, a seated Thousand-handed Kannon,
was carved by Tankei. All the Kannon and its 28
followers are designated National Tresures. The
1,001 smaller images are Importnat Cultural Propeties.
The temple takes its name from the 33 spaces between
pillars in front of the main altar. In Buddhism,
the number "33" is of symbolic importance,
because the bodhisattava Kannon incarnates in 33
different shapes in its missions or mercy. |

 |
| Kiyomizu Temple is noted for its Main Hall on
the cliff top with a broad wooden veranda and a
panoramic view of Kyoto city. The veranda is supported
on a scaffold of wood towering on a wooded hillside,
so the veranda seems to hang in mid-air. The vally
is so deep that there has been the expression "jumping
from the veranda of Kiyomizu temple", which
means doing something daring. The present temple
building was built in 1633, and its main hall has
been desiganated as a National Tresure. |
